Air travel vs. Railway Travel

:D

I am travelling at the same times, but in the opposite direction. I never had to stand. Just came back from beautiful Munich last Sunday. To be entirely truthful, when I travel such distances by train, I do choose first class: Because of the relative peace and quietness in those cars. But it looks like you are travelling in the wrong direction... lol

Well duh! Obviously First Class should not be used as a comparison for anything. Less than 1% of people who use a train will travel first class as the reason people choose a train over an airplane is the cheap price. So you will never get a congested train if you're on first class.

And not on all routes you have First Class compartments. Neither are trains leaving every 15 minutes. Perhaps in Switzerland but not in Germany. Routes between the big cities yes but from smaller cities not.

I never claimed intervals of 15 minutes. The fact that (first class) tickets are cheaper than an economy class flight is not on topic then?

In Sweden air travel is cheaper than train travel. Swedish trains are slow, usually canceled in the winter, they are quite dirty and they might smell bad. I just made a random search on a train ticket from Malmö to Stockholm on the train which takes 4.5 hours and here is the search:2013

As you can clearly see the flight is half the price of the train and it is 4 time faster. I have flown this route quite many times and it has always been very clean aircraft and SAS and Malmö Aviation even offer coffee or juice in economy. I personally like the glory with travelling by train but if the train is this bad then there is no need for it, then there is no reason to use it. I personally srill enjoy train travel in First Class in trains that do deliver like the TGVs and the EUROSTAR trains where you could eat and drink well while you are travelling.

If I need to go to an over day trip to Stockholm then I can choose to waste 9 hours on a train in full discomfort or spend 2 hours of pleasurable time in the air for half the price. What would you choose?

Key:

1 SEK is 0.11 Euro or 0.12 USD.

Flying is cheaper than going by train in Germany as in most European countries.
