Airports size

How is the size determined of the airport? From the number of passengers!? There are some inconsistencies!

No idea how it's calculated but the only thing it really effects is minimum turnaround time, and minimum connection time. I barely look at it otherwise

Well, it also effects the ATC fee and airport fee. The smaller the airports size the lower the fees. Depending on the distance of your flight and the aircraft you use, this might be an important aspect to also consider.

Airport sizes and passenger demand are not related. Airport size affects partially the number of runways and thus number of slots and partially the turnaround time. One thing is certain, the airport size is not related to demand bars.

For various reasons it’s not possible to change the airport sizes in existing worlds. It would probably render many flight plans invalid among other issues.

Where did you get these datas?

...and in addition to what I wrote, there is nothing like Farm Airport, it's Farm Track. And the slot numbers do not depend on the airport size or demand bars, but rather on actual real life runway and taxiway layout.

so to sum up

- Demand: expressed in bars, depends on real life demand

- Size: expressed in structure of airport in real life and real life airport size

- Slots: expressed in Y per 5 mins, depends on real life runway layout

Thanks for comprehensive answer!

What year is the passenger demand based on? For example Templehof server started on August 2010. So I assume its based on 2009 stats. Is this correct or is traffic demand updated every year on the server (for example on templehof)

There are 2 different types of slots: Airport Slots, as we use them in Airlinesim, they are mostly completely independent of the Runway capacity.

And ATC Slots they are dependent on RWY capacity and airspace capacity and we do not simulate them in Airlinesim.

Demand data is the same on all game worlds, it doesn't depend on when the game world was launched. Demand data is updated on an irregular basis, usually per country or for some airports separately (e.g. when a new airport is added to the game).

That's not what SK said at the time, when he was explaining about slots and how runway layout affected the slot count in AS.

Here is the post he made about this topic:

http://community.airlinesim.aero/topic/5728-airport-expansion-and-slots/#entry46920

So as you can see, the number of runways and their layout along with taxiway does affect the slot count in AS. And that’s exactly what I wrote in my post.

Sk explained how the airport slots in airlinesim have been calculated at the beginning. Which is plausible as Airports more or less provide handling capacities according to the runway layout though it is not true all the time.

Anyway airlinesim simulates only airport slots regardless how they have been calculated at the beginning. An ATC Slots is something no airline would like to have as you can easily receive an ATC slot flying between two empty airports with 10 runways for instance and your flight is delayed therefore.

Well the post is from 2014. There was no change in slots since 2014 and all launches since 2014, to my knowledge, use data from 2014, so the data and model SK wrote about.

Two post earlier SK writes “In the former days, we had not a clear system on how to validate the available slots. I must confess that this is not easy to have a feeling for the right numbers to have a balanced slot availability and not to discuss about each airport. All airports with 120 or more slots/hour were reviewed some years ago and the slots were adjusted.”

This implies specifically, that since before 2014 a specific model is being used, which is different to previous model. To my knowledge no slot recalculation for newer servers past 2014 was done, so that assumes the model being used is 2014’s SK model.

A couple of years ago I used to check CAAC (China) stats against passenger demand bars. My conclusion was that they followed the real world rankings. My only complaint was over which airports allowed transfers. I always thought that regional airports should allow transfers irrespective of their demand bar. Not enough opportunity for small feeder a/c.

Would be good if every airport would allow transfer but imagine the required server capacity.
