Examples for bad UI design in 6.2

I'll start with a random one.

Thank you for giving us the hint on where to improve the design.

You want me to comment the screenshot?

This very simple form has two issues:

  • The input field is extremely wide. While this would be tolerable for a left-aligned form, in a right-aligned form like this it's difficult to see that the field has a value.
  • "Passengers per week" looks exactly like an input field.

Generally, right-aligned forms are problematic if they exceed a certain width.

Nope ... haven't written anything like this.

Next one… Inventory. I won’t go into details about the Question if the view has too little, too much, the wrong or just the right info.

Issues:

  • The controls for selecting an airport pair used to be in one location, now they are spread out across the screen. There are basically three areas:
    • Left column, where you have the select lists.
    • Top row, where you have an alternative way to select the airport pair, but it is as far as possible away from the left column. Additionally, this field occupies a whole row on the screen, 85% of which is grey.
    • The previous/reverse/next buttons, also glued to the right border of the screen.
While this may be a little bit more usable on a touchscreen or with a mouse (but still confusing), it’s very cumbersome on a trackpad (i.e. notebook).

Why not integrate the previous/reverse/next buttons into the normal selection (e.g. “previous” is then just swapping the contents of the destination and origin fields) and make the input field for direct entry of airport pairs an advanced feature that is disabled by default?

  • “view in scheduling” and “view market analysis”: Even the names of these buttons indicate that these are just different views on airport pairs. These should be tabs.
  • The two buttons that lead to the station pages could be pulled into the row above.
  • The distance between the two airports is a very relevant piece of information, but it’s difficult to read.

Yeah...with that new allocation field i completely agree. I was writing a new allocation and was looking at the left side of the field. I thought that my keyboard is broken. Only after about a minute i noticed that the field is right aligned.

Next one... Aircraft scheduling

First I want to say that I really like that the aircraft info and some other stuff was moved to the new right column.

Still, some issues:

  • The button bar in the top right corner is a strange mix of actions (withdraw pilots), jumping to other areas of the application (aircraft type/performance) and navigating inside a list (but you don't see in which list). Why are the type specific links not also moved to the right column? And please make them links or icons. Buttons are for actions, not navigation.
  • I never understood why the "Withdraw pilots" button is on this screen, since you can't add pilots here.
  • Even on a Full HD screen you need to scroll down to see the current flight plan of the aircraft, yet a lot of vertical space is wasted:
    • The "New Flight Number" form consists mainly of blank space, this could be a lot more compact. It could even be moved to a separate column (on large screens).
    • In the flight plan display, each weekday name consumes a full row. Why aren't the weekday names just in front of the other rows?
  • I never understood why the "Withdraw pilots" button is on this screen, since you can't add pilots here. - OF COURSE YOU CAN ADD PILOTS HERE
  • The "New Flight Number" form consists mainly of blank space, this could be a lot more compact. AGREED
  • In the flight plan display, each weekday name consumes a full row. IT'S BEEN ALWAYS LIKE THIS

Ok, I missed that one about the pilots. Still don't think the button makes sense there, but that's just my opinion.

In the flight plan display, each weekday name consumes a full row. IT'S BEEN ALWAYS LIKE THIS

And if? It was a waste of vertical space then, too. It just wasn't an issue before because you could actually see the whole flight plan (and even the flight plan operation form) without scrolling. Now you can't.

Although OP may sound harsh, I believe that he can contribute a lot in the UI. Perhaps OP can consolidate all the room for improvement and let sk knows. So that he can fix in the next update...
