If/when an airline is found guilty and it is decided that a financial punishment is needed, this will usually be a sum of money based on scale of cheating, how long they have been cheating for, and what economical advantage it has given that player. If the scale is bigger than the bank account (ie aircraft leased) the player will likely be given time to scale back of his own accord if possible to pay the debt.
I thought about it and if you deal with it this way, a particular cheating model becomes quite attractive. I'm not saying anyone has ever cheated this way, because I do not want to have my comments deleted.
1. We all know that the starting cash amount is essential. If I could get 20 million AS$ at the very beginning instead of 10, that would be a huge advantage, especially on new servers. Every extra AS$ buys (leases) new planes which improve your hub and make more money.
2. So lets say I want to start on a new server. Lets call my airline "Airline A". I get 10 million in cash to buy planes. But thats too slow for me. So - via multiple accounts - I set up Airline B, Airline C, Airline D, Airline E, Airline F and Airline G somewhere else in the world. I build them and let them grow until their equity exceeds 20 million and they become eligible for stock trading.
3. An then, I have to coordinate it well:
- Airline G goes IPO, Airline A buys as much stock of Airline G as possible.
- Airlines B, C, D, E and F cancel all their leases and stack up cash in their accounts.
- Then I let Airlines B, C, D, E, F buy Airline G stock from Airline A for the maximum allowed price and sell it back instantly for the minimum price, resulting in a nice "profit" for Airline A on every transaction. After I've squeezed all (or most) cash out of B, C, D, E and F, Airline A should have around 100 million extra cash.
- Then I quickly liquidate Airlines B to G so the stock trades disappear from the database.
- Result: Airline A is left with 100 million extra cash and happily goes shopping for new aircraft.
The point is: This whole thing can happen in one night. If it is discovered, from what I understand, it will take at least days if not weeks until it has consequences (which I understand, since support cannot handle all these matters instantly). Meanwhile, the 100 million get invested in a fleet of A350s or whatever. And IF at all it is discovered later, apparently Airline A would be granted a "grace period" to repay the EUR 100 million. They may keep their whole fleet and continue making big bucks. So in the worst case for Airline A, the 100 million are a huge loan which you cannot get legally. And in their best case, the 100 million are theirs forever.
