Selling Stocks

tried to find this information the wiki, with no luck.

On Monday I purchased 1000 shares for x amount. Today the stock has gone up 15% and I now wish to sell. Why can I not sell the shares? I dont get it, since in real life you can buy and sell at anytime.

Any reasoning behind this?

In real life, the financial intermediaries always have buyers and sellers that are willing to buy/sell at a certain price.

In AS, though the system determines current price based on profits, cashflow and RoE, a buyer isn’t always available.

There are two things you can do:

  1. You can ‘Place an Order’ under the sell shares section - a selling order. Here, you put down the quantity you want to sell, and the price you want to sell it for. Once a buyer decides to buy the shares, he/she will place a buy order and the system will execute the transaction and balance the accounts on both sides.

  2. Sometimes, there are buyers who have already placed buy orders. You can look at your portfolio of shares and see how many of them have buying orders places, and see if you can make some profit through some trading.

Another reason why some airlines hold shares is to get financial data on their competitors. This way, they can target their strategies to make the other insolvent.

Sorry. Maybe I didnt explain well enough. The issue is not purchase, its selling. Why am I not able to sell all shares immediately. Right now I am looking at 7,000,000+ in profits if it would let me sell at current price. However, it seems I cant sell, I can only put in an offer to sell.

You bought these shares from someone who put them on offer - now you need someone who buys them from you. They can’t simply disappear - there needs to be a company holding these shares.

Maybe you can offer them for a lower price to attract interest of other players to buy these shares.

Wow. That is just crazy. So much for playing the stock market game. Was hoping it would work in the same instance as real life. If I buy a share this minute, I can sell it the next. Guess not the case. Ill have to learn to play it differently.

Thank you for your answer/reply. Much appreciated.

Well, it’s simply not a stock market game. It’s just a small feature - to get some money form other companys with an IPO, to buy another enterprise… but you can play the whole game without ever using the stock market. And it’s not intended to be able to make much of your profits with stock trades - you should simply run your airline :)

its a pretty sweet feature actually. Ill be playing it quite a bit.

Well… it does! As it was explained above - in RL you must have a buyer too. Who do you think buys shares if you sell in RL?? God?

The problem in AS is simply there isn’t that much demand as in RL.

I'll refresh this thread a little

...and what about situation that there are buy and sell offers (for the same price, and even same ammount), but nothing is happening in the system???

I am not absolutely sure, but I do think that AS have to approve the trade. But as I said, I'm not 100% sure.

Keep in mind the trades only happen every 15 minutes, so if you are looking at the stock page early in the game status timer, you could end up waiting about 15 minutes for the trade to go through. The trade isn't immediate.
