I have cabin configurations for both of these. Both state they do 440 seats but with the same seating the a340-600 seats more. Why?
A340-600 is much much longer than the -300, so with the same Lie-flats in business, it will have much more room to fit more seats in economy.
440 is the exit limit allowed by regulations - normally set by how quickly you could evacuate the plane in an emergency.
Theres similar things with the 737-900NG with exit limits set to 189 but could easily seat 200+ in terms of space
