a couple of weeks ago I logged into my account to see that it had been resetted. No big deal - I hadn't recharged my account for a couple of months and so after the intial grace period the contained enterprise had been deleted.
Before that the airline had been a market leader in its country making 8 digit profits a week. Nevertheless I felt a bit tired / or bored. From its main hub in Northern Europe I had connected all major routes and built up an efficient network. Now there was no more reasonable room to grow. Of course I could reset the account and start over again but then I find it kind of hard to press the button, knowing I had invested almost a year of work into it. So I just stopped looking into it since everything ran smooth on autopilot and eventually forgot about the game.
This might be the reason why the game is facing so many dead servers. Long term players have grown huge empires that just sit and exist now there as their owners can't let go of them and thus "blocking" market space that would make the servers attractive to new players.
So I was wondering what was the acutal reason to play airlinesim? For most players it is obviously to build a successful airline which acts as profitable as possible, has a giant network, a vast fleet of different of aircraft all of the three combined.
But what if you changed the mindset behind the game to not have a successful company growing for years but to be a successful manager that can handle different markets and situation. I was therfor thinking of an achievement system with some sort of badges or ranks. Players could gain these by manging challenges.
These could be in differen displicines like:
Geography (Found a Company on every Continent)
Economic (Make a profit of XX % for XX weeks in a row)
Aviational (Have a fleet of consiting out of only russian airplanes)
After gaining a badge, it could be visible in a players profile or forum.
By this also the fight for limited resources could be fought since players might have different motiviations to continue their games.
Interesting proposition, but there is always a room to grow ... for a European airline, that may be other European markets (inside EU). There are also countries with unrestricted market access. You can always try your luck in a God-forgotten African country, for example. I see players who have been building airlines since 2007/2008 and still active and growing their empire.
You want yourself a challenge when bored? Reset without actually resetting. Delete all flight plans, wait for a week, and then recreate your airline from a scratch. You will have money to do it, now you can try to create even more optimal route plans.
You want even more challenge? Cancel all the leases and start from a scratch, but with all the money in your bank account. Announce your "partial reset" on the forums, so competition can jump in. Compete on used market for all your former aircraft.
Help new players by mentoring them, be active in the forums. Create a leasing to company to offer cheap leases at 10% to new players. Help them with their route planning.
There are so many ways to spend time on AirlineSim, that it is hard to actually get bored. You may get bored in one area (e.g. scheduling and growing out of your hub) but you may find new vigor helping others grow.
You can set up those same challenges yourself, no need for the game to do it. Just set yourself a goal to achieve something you've never done before in this game and go for it.
I've never understood this obsession people have with achievement "badges". As if somehow we're all supposed to look at someone's profile and gasp at their awesomeness like it's a big deal. Personally I think the valuable development time should be used elsewhere.
I do not believe that you will ever get out of things to do with one holding. Maybe you remember how it was previously with the achievements before 6.2?
Talking about achievements you can of course compete in likes or amount of posts on the forum which will result in a different status (newbie, flight enginer, first officer, captain, etc). By the way after posting this post I reached captain status :D.

Congratulations, and welcome to being a fellow Captain!
It's very interesting idea and certainly worth looking-into. I find my attention and interests towards AS wax and wane like waves. I would get bored from time to time, which interests rekindle when I couldn't wait to test a new flight-wave strategy, expand in a new market, or think of a 5th-freedom/triangular route combination that made me break into a formally unprofitable airport. I think I always look for something new in AS, and that is the reason I'm enjoying the game.
Considering the depth of the game, a badge system might be too 'light' or 'trivial' for hard-core players. Yet it's a good direction to making the game more fun. For example, a in-game SKYTRAX ratings system etc. I really like the "Design Award 2012" post in the forum, but I don't know why it's discontinued. Things like that do make the game even more attractive at least for me.
