Dev Log Week 2025-31: Message from the past

As I am writing this, my future self should be taking a “vacation” away from the computer. So I scheduled this post to be released automatically on August the 4th and if you can read this text, this seems to have worked :tada:

But on to devlog stuff: As discussed in the previous issue, I got to work on an upgrade of the AirlineSim and Prosperous Universe Steam clients. This started out really well, as bumping the versions of the library we use for the AirlineSim client went without any issues. The only thing that didn’t work (and likely never worked reliably except for a small number of lucky users before) was the Linux version. We sort of accepted this as a “known issue” because the Linux crowd isn’t all that big and we didn’t want to invest the time to make it work properly. But as said last week, the goal with this upgrade is to also use the more recent setup we employ for AirlineSim to Prosperous Universe. And before we do that, we want to get the client to work reliably on both Windows and Linux. This turned out to be a challenge that - despite my goal to get this to-do item checked off before my vacation - remains unsolved. Since I don’t usually work under Linux myself, Michi had to jump in and help out. He was able to get some things to work, but we haven’t managed to package everything up in a way that is required by Steam. So we’re going to revisit this towards the end of August. That said, the new version of the AirlineSim client did go live regardless, including Japanese as a supported language on Steam.

The remainder of the week was more or less exclusively about prepping everything for my absence, including a final maintenance patch and some communication. I say “more or less”, because among other things, I had the great pleasure of onboarding several new volunteer translators who want to contribute to localisations in Russian, Thai and Simplified Chinese. Welcome aboard!

And now I’ll do my best to stay off my (work) computer for two weeks. Wish me luck! :crossed_fingers:

The next regular devlog will likely be released on August the 25th.
