Mahjong Exploit

Hi all–

First and foremost, I would like to make it abundantly clear that this is not a hateful message. I honestly admire the commitment to push AS to its extremes to make the most profit.

With that said, I noticed something that probably shouldn’t be part of the game. Mahjong Airlines in Wright is by far and away the most prosperous airline so far, with 19 aircraft so far (16 737, 1 727, 1 757). I was curious how they expanded so fast, so I did a little digging. I looked at their fleet list and seating configs and found this.

I found that they are just printing profit, running almost completely business class configured aircraft in standard seats and slimline economy.

This seems a little too exploity for my taste, let me know what you all think!

Generally speaking: No public accusations of other players. If you want to report something or somebody, please use the in-game form that exists for that purpose.

That said: The exploit you describe is a known issue and no hard rule against it exists. Sadly, there is also no “elegant” technical solution to counter it, because the only way to prevent this from working would be hard minimum service levels. In the current ORS, I’d hate to implement this measure because it would narrow down the options even more and there’s really only one “pax type”. I might be able to add those hard limits to some of the passenger types in the new Individual Travel Requests system, but the core issue remains: In an empty world, with far less capacity than demand, wouldn’t most passengers that need to go somewhere book whatever was available?

That indicates strong demand, so you can try booking all first-class cabins

I must admit Im guilty of doing a single class like this with just one of my aircraft but who doesn’t want at least one small executive business jet flying around?

That being said I have used the class system to create a prosperous airline however my rule of thumb is to generally not use the higher booking classes for more then 30% of the total cabin space. I like to try & find a balance between my profit margins & still keeping a somewhat plausible cabin layout. At least for a premium airline type anyway lol

All business class cabins isn’t inherently unrealistic. I would argue that’s exactly what JSX does with their EMB145s. If they could fill a 737 with such a layout, they’d be operating a 737.

Forget the new world economics, would an airline get in trouble for trying to utilize slimline/standard seats for business & first class passengers in an established server?

ngl after looking at the graphs again wouldn’t it make more sense to add a bigger debuff like a minus red four/five rating for business & first class after say the 1000km mark?

& I don’t just mean from a gameplay perspective but I can’t say I’d know anyone in their right mind would want to actually purchase into poor economy valued seating when paying for a quote better service. I know some airlines who have in the past offered business seating which is the same seat as economy but with a bit more spacing, however that would only be the case for short haul around an hour or less flights.

The backend algorithm could be tweaked so essentially you wouldn’t need to make it a rule violation & then spend time enforcing that since it wouldn’t then be a sustainable business model

I completely agree with you. A little rebalancing could do the trick.

I’ll consider it

Still a somewhat risky move for existing game worlds

The first time I was exposed to games, there were only premium seats available, and the price could be set to 200%

There’s absolutely some risk. I’m certain it would mess with the optimizations of countless airlines on every server. I don’t feel that it’s worth messing with, especially since the new DRS should solve all these types of complaints. New world economics will always be a thing. People can and will trade quality and service for price.

I only feel that if it’s against the rules, resulting in airline deletion or bans, then the game really should be tweaked to remove the effectiveness of such strategies. Otherwise it’s a valid strategy and should be left alone.

This was my point precisely–in the real world such a product would never sell. The only comparable product in the real world would be European Business class with a blocked middle seat. (something I don’t think the game can implement in its current state).

I don’t have a super elegant solution, which is why I thought I would bring it here!

Side note–I have no issue with Slimline Seats, just thought I’d put that out there  .
