I’m going to start with a quote… “Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results”. You have to understand that if people have taken their time out to try and offer up advice, and therefore fast tracking your trial and error, that it is generally polite to listen to it, and not argue with it.
As it stands with your Greek airline it seems like you have taken on a little advice. Some people will disagree with my tactic here, but instead of trying to offer advice...again, I decided to start an airline and prove that by following the advice works and can create a successful airline. The airline is now liquidated out of principle, and not to spoon feed anymore, but note the airline started after yours, so you had more opportunity than me to make a success. Of course it seems there are more airlines in Greece now so numbers may no longer be relevant.
Starting out…Research… advice given = Don’t start with long routes, exotic routes. Start with domestic routes. Research real life, and research in game. Flightradar24 provides the top 10 routes for every real life airport, and Wikipedia usually provides some statistics. With a good selection of airports to target I then looked in game…how are other airlines doing? Yes some routes had already over 10 daily flights, but when every single flight was fully booked…then that’s a winner. So I started decided on 16 routes, 10 domestic, 6 international, some 4x daily, some 1x daily…all based on simple research.
What aircraft…advice given = avoid turboprops if possible, use aircraft evaluation tool. I decided to start with the Fokker 100. The main reason is that there were plenty available on the used aircraft market and the AET suggested a good profit, and its not a turboprop.
Service and Cabin profile… advice given = don’t use bad seats, create a good service profile = Personally I hate the user interface of the service profile, so could not be bothered for a short project, so I stuck with default, if I was looking to be more competitive over a longer time I would create a better one. Cabin profile I used, was a fairly efficient profile, giving me about 85 seats on the F100…10 of them.
Scheduling…advice given = Use waves, and use the 3 day delay tool. Every aircraft needs a maintenance period of at least 4 hours…for old aircraft about 6. So I decided to have my aircraft on the ground between 00:00 and 06:00 every day…and then have 4 waves in ATH. Arrivals before 07:45, 11:45, 15:45, 19:45…and departures 09:00, 13:00, 17:00, 21:00. So I have 4 waves, but condensed into a 12 hour period. This means even if someone lands at 07:45, taking a 13:00 wave flight is still not too bad.
How did I do… advice given = trial & error… average load on the first day was 74%, with domestic 81%. The 3 worst routes…cancelled, the flights with fully booked flights….added flights. I added 2 F100s for my domestic flying and Cyprus (the stronger markets), then decided to introduce something smaller for international flights to try and make them more profitable…E145s. Then I realised I could not fly these in to big airports (mistake on my part), so introduced two F70s too. The F70s took over he international, and then I used the E145s for trial and error on new routes. Average load on day 5 = 75%...E145 T/E fleet = 20 flights = 46%, F70 = 6 flights = 55%, F100 domestic + Cyprus = 42 flights = 92%.
So same again on day 10… 10 routes dropped…routes with 100% upgraded. As some domestic routes had flights on all 4 waves now I added a second set of waves for those…07:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00. I should really use larger aircraft but again not for a short project. I also added the E175 to replace the F70 which would mean better quality on international flights. So the final loads = E145 = 17 flights = 60%, E175/F70 = 8 flights = 65%, F100 = 59 flights = 85%.
All in all this was done with the advice on this forum (and ok some experience), but mostly advice. I would add some more advice which I don’t think has been done before….
- Don’t avoid competition, avoiding routes already done by competitors is of zero advantage to you. Theres a reason they do well on the flight…demand!
- If a flight is doing well (100%), add more frequencies. If its doing badly…drop it…don’t shed a tear...this could be considered trial and error
Good luck with your new airlines, don't be too proud to listen to advice given, because it does work....as proven.
I hope that helps
Ian
