Neither “base” nor “focus city” implies “transfer capability”. In fact, I’d argue a “focus city” is called that for the very reason that it isn’t a transfer hub, but merely an airport that a (typically low-cost) carrier operates a lot of flights to.

And concerning the longer list of suggestions: We’d have to check each one of them. But actually, we haven’t really defined any rules for what makes an airport a transfer airport yet. The flag was introduced for technical reasons, primarily. The rule is still exactly the same: Size 4 and above = transfer capability. It’s a literal spreadsheet formula :laughing:

To go a bit further afield, I personally dislike the fixed “size categories” for airports in general. There’s so much guesswork and personal opinion involved in deciding which airport falls into which category. I’d love to come up with a more deterministic system that takes into account the available facilities and resources in a somewhat easy-to-research way while then deriving the important metrics for the game from this. But that’s a huge project and none that’s on any sort of roadmap (hah!).

Last but not least, let’s keep in mind that the transfer restrictions have their origin in simulation performance to begin with: It’s not that we wanted to restrict transfers per se…I guess you’d be able to manage some sort of transfer at any airport if you really wanted to, it might just be slow and cumbersome and you might not be able to facilitate cross-border ones. But the reason is that the work for the ORS literally explodes when every node in the graph serves as a transfer node.

OK, most of the new airlines do not use hubs per se, they develop focus cities which are also base cities where crews are located.

If we go down to reduce the list to real focus cities with major operations (like really the main airport for doing business, we would get

Personally I’d love to see a feature where if I pay a (very large) amount of AS money that transferring can be set up at a specific airport. If an airline comes to an airport of strategic location and says we will pay for a new terminal and transfer capability, I can’t see them declining, subject to government approval but that’s beyond the scope of AS.

Will we get some of those cities for Christmas? At least some on each continent :wink:

I took a look as requested. Taking into account Martin’s explanation, combined with the data I found for the abovementioned airports, I was convinced for CHS, AZA & EOH. I have suggested them to have transfer possibilities in the next patch.

Also, City oriented demand system is planned for the future, which will make some of the airports @rubiohiguey2000 mentioned be viable and usable for lower cost airlines, and airlines that focus on “long and skinny routes” and Point to Point, rather than hub and spoke
