I recently returned from a vacation to Iceland. Outbound, I flew from San Francisco to Keflavik via Boston; for the return, I flew Keflavik-Seattle-San Francisco (my itinerary was through Expedia).

SFO-BOS: I flew on JetBlue (A320-200)...I was not impressed. Virtually every employee that I encountered--from the check-in agent to the flight attendants--seemed unhappy with their jobs, at the very least, even disgruntled. They showed zero interest in their customers; some were downright rude. I did not personally have any bad encounters with any of them but witnessed some things that made me shake my head.  The economy seats had individual TVs with many channels via DirecTV, which was nice.

BOS-KEF and KEF-SEA: I flew Icelandair (757-200). Their announcements were made in both Icelandic and English, and their English announcements were sometimes difficult to understand; otherwise they were professional, courteous, and they looked sharp in their uniforms. Free movies at each seat from a fairly good selection was nice. KEF was a sort of free-for-all, with no announcement prior the gate opening and no organized boarding.

SEA-SFO: Alaska Airlines (737-800). They were, by far, the most professional and organized of the three airlines I flew with. The staff made plenty of clear announcements so there was little confusion. They were also the friendliest.

Alaska Airlines and Icelandair were good; JetBlue was definitely a disappointment as far as the crews were concerned.

Possibly my favorite airline to fly was Mexicana back in the 1990s. My most pleasant flight was on a Mexicana Fokker 100 from Mexico City to Merida.

I like Northwest, and FEDEX (true steerage;) because I have never had a bad time with them. I hate Delta because I flew on them four times and they messed up everything all four as well as overpriced. To top it off they destroyed a great airline and cut my hometown from their list of hubs. Delta sucks.

My ranking (out of 10)(+ Route):

9: Lufthansa and Quantas (both on longhaul)

7.5: AirBerlin (FRA <-> North Africa)

5: Tiger Australia (regional)

4.5: Virgin Australia (regional)

1: Jetstar Australia (regional)

My ranking out of the 4 (!) I've been on:

1. BA (longhaul)

2. Futura Gael (defunct)

3. Aer Lingus

4. Ryanair

I have flown on: Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Saudia, Syrian Air(only once), Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, Alitalia, B.M.I,Easy jet, American AIrlines, United/continental(Most flown on), Jetblue, southwest, NWA/Delta, PAN AM, Allegiant AIr, Skywest, Frontier, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines , Asiana and  Alaska Air.

The best are:

1. Qatar AIrways (flown on ORD to DOH and JFK to DOH) Both Exemplary!

2. Etihad (flown on ORD to AUH five times) Simply the best!

3. Cathay Pacific(flown on HKG to LAX, HKG to LHR, HKG to NRT, HKG to ICN)

4. Emirates(flown on LAX to DXB, DFW to DXB, IAH to DXB, JKF to DXB, DXB to KHI, DXB to HKG, DXB to LHR, DXB to CDG, DXB to MAN) Nice comfy seats and pleasant service!

5. Lufthansa/Saudia(flown on DFW to FRA, FRA to MUC, MUC to RUH, ORD to FRA, LAX to FRA, IAD to JED, RUH to CDG, RUH to DXB)

Worst are:

1. American Airlines (WORST never fly them. theirs MD-90/80 and 757s/767s are pathetic. Although American Eagle is good)

2. Syrian Air (Only flew once and it was horrific! DMM to KHI on Boeing 727. I thought it was my last flight :D.

3. United/Continental. Although i have travelled the most on United, Service often its very bad!

..theirs MD-90/80

American Airlines doesn´t operate MD-90s (only Delta)  ;)

DMM to KHI on Boeing 727

The Boeing 727 would compensate any short-fall of service

1: Jetstar Australia (regional)

That bad?

That bad?

It could have just been my impression. It was SYD-AVV after a really long day for me, so I could have just been too tired.

But it was definitely worse than the others.

Here is top 10 best and worst:

Best:

  • Etihad
  • Singapore Airlines
  • KLM
  • Qatar Airways
  • Aeroflot
  • Emirates
  • Icelandair
  • Virgin (Atlantic and America)
  • Norwegian
  • Turkish Airlines

Worst:

  • SAS (exept for long haul which could be in the best cathegory)
  • Ryanair
  • American Airlines
  • American Eagle
  • Wizzair
  • TUI, the flight was ok but the service was not
  • I can't think of more

Pleasant surprises:

  • EasyJet, I was expecting RyanAir conditions but it was actually quite good except for the 2km walk in CPH airport but I can't complain about some exercise :).

I've only flown on very few different airlines, as I have come to like Delta's business class. It's really a joy over the pond in general, as long as it's not the 764, being a 195cm tall guy, it's incredibly comfortable to be able to lie completely flat. The food is quite alright, and all in all if you find the right departures, I think it's great value for money.

The worst I've flown must be Transavia. No service, horrific leg space. And then being accused of ruining airline seats upon arrival because I ate crisps onboard. What a crew.

Delta is very uneven on the quality of flights, at least for international economy, (Domestic and flights to Canada are pretty much the normal service for a U.S. airline). Their flights to Japan are much better than flights to China even though China has a longer distance. Can't really explain the reason, maybe because competition from ANA and JAL even though Delta offers much lower price?

For me, that would be, by order of preference:

Best airlines (major)

– Avianca ♥️♥️♥️

– Garuda Indonesia ♥️

– KLM

– ANA

– Air New Zealand

– Air Canada

I couldn't give a chance to the gulf airlines – don't have the right to.

Best airlines (low-cost)

– Easyjet (minimal service but great quality-price ratio)

– Vueling (awesome service out of MAD for the price)

– WOW Iceland (the airline actually has my comment about its service level in its name)

Worst airlines

– Finnair (Great service to Asia, but they apparently don't bother looking at their own schedule. 3 hours delay. Luggage lost in HEL, then found, then lost again. That's a shame, the A350 is awesome.)

– Iberia (Terrible on board service, rude staff.)

– Air France (Always on strike, completely unreliable. Unfortunately, I have to take them a lot. However, lounges and on-board service are OK.)

– S7 (Crappy old plane)

– US Airways (Rude staff, awful connections in Philadelphia, multiple occurrences of lost luggage.)

– Alitalia (Poor customer service. Catering was a very pleasant surprise though.)

Absolutely terrible airlines (low-cost)

– Ryanair (feeling like a sheep in sardina class, I was asked to pay 60 EUR for 0,1kg of excess luggage [come on...]. BVA airport is awful.)

– Transavia (old aircraft, and unlike any other airline [except for Ryanair], not even the glass of water is for free.)

Best airlines (Longhaul):

1. Suisse

2. New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Emirates

3. Cathay Pacific and Turkish Airlines (while Turkish Airlines is great for short- to midhaul)

4. Lufthansa (to Asia, only in Business class)

Worst airlines (Longhaul):

1. Air India

2. US Airways

3. Air France, Iberia and JetAirways

Have only experienced them in business class both on domestic and long haul, though I have only flown to and from Europe with them internationally. Still, most of the time, I enjoy their business class product in comparison to price. I had one experience flying from SLC to AMS on a B764 with lie-flat seats last year - But the horrific seat space on that flight made it impossible for me to lie flat. Though their A330 business class has plenty room for long legs.
