As mentioned in the previous two devlogs, I was on vacation in week 41, so here’s an appropriately themed placeholder picture taken on my Sky Express flight from FRA to ATH:
As it’s usually the case after even a short vacation, catching up with emails, support tickets and accounting took a bit of time after my return to the office. So there wasn’t too much to phone home about in week 42.
I did spend bit more time on new social media channels, so you can now find our games on Instagram and Threads if you’re so inclined. But as said, this is mostly a matter of “blocking real-estate” and for the time being, we don’t plan on posting any special content there besides links to news items. So as an active member of the community (especially one reading these lines), you won’t miss these news anyway. But who knows…maybe Meta can send a new user or two our way…
The biggest development topic of last week was travel request logging. As the name suggests, this feature logs all individual travel requests so I can run analysis on them. At the time I am writing this, Paine’s database held 15,598,645 such records
.
I don’t care so much about the individual properties of those requests (yet), but rather how well or not they are booked. In particular, I track how many connections and itineraries (= connection + inventory + fare) were available for a given request, how many itineraries were filtered out for which reasons, how many itineraries were skipped during booking (meaning the itinerary qualified but when the time came to book it, at least on inventory was full due to other bookings) etc. This information is crucial in figuring out issues with the current configuration and/or customer types. For example, in my very first experiments with the data, I already determined that the budget ranges for express and urgent cargo probably make no sense. And my suspicion that connection culling might be too aggressive for travel requests with late arrival times looks like it might get confirmed.
If you have any more concrete suspicions of things not quite working as they should or feeling off in Paine, please feel free to post them here so I can see whether I can spot anything in the data.
