Redefinition of airport quality

What?

The qualitative equivalent to Redefinition of airport handling capacities, this item is about redefining what “airport quality” entails or might entail. It is not a feature per se, but a concept for what features in this realm might look like.

General ideas and/or factors (non-exhaustive):

  • Architectural/aesthetic quality
  • Spaciousness
  • Material quality
  • Availability/quantity of amenities like sitting accommodations, restrooms etc
  • Cleanliness
  • Connection to local mass transit, road networks etc.
  • Commercial offerings (shops, hotels, restaurants, car rentals, …)
  • Experiences (tours, observation decks, museums, …)

Lounges are intentionally left out here as those are their own feature.

Why?

Besides the cold hard capacity a terminal provides and the efficiency with which it does so, there are “less hard” factors that influence how well it is liked by passengers and how much it costs to build and operate it. As usual, the resulting trade-off matters when deciding whether to run a full-service or a no-frills carrier and as such fits nicely into the overarching concept for next-generation AirlineSim.

When?

With or after Redefinition of airport handling capacities, the earliest.

This might make smaller airports more viable, which will hopefully lead to a much more even distribution of airlines throughout the map
Of course it’ll not be the only one to cause this very welcome effect

It would be interesting if an airline could pay to improve the connecting efficiency. For instance, by consolidating the operations into one terminal, passengers might be able to get to their next flight faster, thus cutting down the minimum connection time. It does seem that the amount of time required for transfer depends more on the terminal, as opposed to the airport itself.
